The Race

The Namib Desert Challenge is a 220km multi-day trail race, run over 5 consecutive days 7th edition 24 – 28 October 2016

The Namib Desert Challenge has been described as “hot, hard and awesome”. The race has become increasingly popular over the past seven years with ultra runners from all over the world.

The race is now in its seventh year and takes place within the Namib Naukluft National Park in Namibia. Taking place over five days, the NDC is 220 kilometers long and separated into five stages of between 34km and 58km. Stages cover some of the most beautiful and diverse scenery, from rocky mountains to the famous Sesriem Canyon and the two highest sand dunes in the world, Dune 45 and Big Daddy.

Stage Race

Experience pure adventure whilst tackling Africa's toughest trail running stage race

As a self-sufficient race you will be responsible for providing your own food supplies. We balance your need to carry all your kit, to only needing to carry your pure essentials, such as emergency food rations, emergency gear and clothing, thus still offering a challenging multi-day stage race.
The 5 stages of the NDC are designed to cover the most spectacular and varied part of the area. The Namib-Naukluft region offers some of the most remote, diverse, pristine and untouched wilderness areas to be found anywhere on earth. It’s in this environment, which is often inaccessible to the general public, that we host this 220km, multi-day extreme endurance footrace.
For the entire duration of the race, competitors will camp at the same location, which is a very well maintained camping site in the Namib Naukluft National Park. The location of the race village is amazing. It offers sweeping views across the vast horizon, with stunning views of the mountains, which seem to reach up to the distant sky. Each competitor will be allocated his/her own tent.
The race village has separate, male and female, hot water shower and toilet facilities which are cleaned on a daily basis.
A large communal tent with tables and chairs will be set up for the runners to sit around and relax after each stage.  This is the place to mingle with your fellow competitors and relax whilst swapping stories about the challenges faced during the past stage. Safe drinking water is readily available.
